Properly Charging Your Electric Bicycle Battery

Electric bikes are an economical and environmentally-friendly way to travel around your city. They’re also super fun to ride and easy to charge and maintain. You can take your battery off of your bike and charge it while you’re at school or work, or plug your charger directly into the battery while it’s attached to your bike. There are also a few things you can do to take care of your battery to keep it performing at its best.

Correct Charging Steps:

Whether you charge the battery on the bike or take it off, you need to follow these 4 steps to charge it correctly.
  1. Turn off the power. Just put the battery on the bike or use key to unlock the battery off the bike.
  2. Connect the Charger to the Battery: Prior to plugging the charger into any outlet, establish the connection between the charger and the battery. This sequence helps in ensuring a gradual and safe power flow.
  3. Connect the Charger to an AC Outlet: Once the charger is securely connected to the battery, proceed to plug it into an AC outlet. This step initiates the charging process, channeling power from the source to the battery.
  4. When the battery is fully charged, disconnect the charger from the wall AC outlet first and then from the battery. This sequential disconnection mitigates the risk of sparks and ensures a smooth transition to a fully charged battery.

Understanding Charger Port Sparks:

Charger port sparking can be attributed to two primary reasons, each highlighting the importance of vigilance during the charging process:


1. Presence of Dust and Water: The accumulation of dust and ingress of water within the charger port can spell trouble. When dust and water find their way into the port, they pave the path for a potential short-circuit scenario. This, in turn, leads to sparking when the battery connects to the power supply.

2. Charging Step Errors: Sometimes, sparks can occur due to errors in the charging steps. Incorrect sequencing or improper handling during the charging process can result in sparks, potentially endangering both the battery and the user.

You can charge indoors, but please note the following:

1. Don’t charge e-bikes in bedrooms or where escape routes can be blocked – for example, hallways.
2. Must use our original charger for charging
3. Note that the charging time is about 7-9 hours. Don’t leave your battery charging unattended, when you are out or while you are asleep.
4. Don’t cover chargers or battery packs when charging
5. Don’t overload sockets or use inappropriate extension leads
6. Don’t charge or store batteries in direct sunlight or in hot locations (above 45⁰C)
7. Don’t charge batteries close to combustible materials or hazardous substances.
8. Always unplug your charger when you have finished charging
9. If your battery can be removed from your e-bike and charged separately, it should be charged on a hard flat surface where heat can disperse and in an area with good ventilation.
